What is Religious diversity?

Religious diversity respects our dignity and humanity

Terrorize the religious stereotypes.

Religious diversity is the reality that there are different religions that have their own ways of practicing and carrying out rituals. Theories have been made to describe the ways in which a religion could be viewed. A religion could be approached in a pluralistic, exclusivist or an inclusivist manner. A pluralistic approach to religious diversity, as it suggests that one religion is as good as any other. An exclusivist approach, on the other hand, is nailed on the fact that there is only one uniquely valuable religion. Finally, inclusive theories attempt to create a middle ground by agreeing to exclusivism, which suggests that one religion has the most value, but also agreeing with pluralism that others still have significant religious value. Religious discrimination comes into play when a certain religion views itself as more valuable than another religion.

It is also evident whenever a person is judged or prejudiced by another person because of his religion. Nowadays, religions are associated with certain stereotypes that make other people judge them before even meeting them. Having limited opportunities in jobs and being dismissed from work because of your religion are few modern examples of how this kind of discrimination is prevalent. Religious stereotypes are commonly associated with Muslims, which people assume their religion is intrinsically violent. A woman with a hijab would be falsely accused of being a terrorist.

Just like any other kind of discrimination, religious discrimination is a structural and societal issue. Private institutions, such as media providers could possibly portray religions in a bad light. Using the Islamic religion as an example, the media could showcase Muslims as angry and violent people who urge war. Only highlighting the wars and gun fires happening in Middle Eastern countries would make people believe that Muslims are violent, as these countries are predominantly Islamic. These would cause unjust stereotypes and prejudices to the Muslim people. Structures, such as private institutions and media providers play a valuable role in constructing the image of each religion. On the other hand, religious discrimination is also societal. Social constructs and popular belief seem to have influenced us to believe the different stereotypes that are associated with different religions. Again, the media plays a crucial role in creating societal constructs and beliefs as the masses heavily rely on them for information and trust that it will be accurate and true-to-life. For example, the common stereotype of the Islamic religion is terrorists. Ever since this has been the label that society has given to our Muslim brethren. The reason behind it is again, the portrayal of the media of Muslims as blood-hungry people.

It does not matter whether you’re a pluralist, exclusivist or inclusivist. It also does not matter what your religion is. What is important is we give respect to each other and promote our dignity.
